SWATCH: NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen - Espresso

I used my NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen in Ash Brown to death, so when it came time to repurchase I picked up the Espresso shade.  Ash Brown is a lovely neutral medium brown, but I need something with a little more oomph on these dark brows!

NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen - Shade Espresso Swatch

Right away I noticed that the color payoff for the NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen in Espresso is a lot more pronounced than Ash Brown.  In the full review for Ash Brown, I had listed the color payoff as "Decent" because the formula seemed just a bit more shy coming out of the pen.  This is not the case with Espresso, which is wham bam in your face so you have to apply sparingly and build up as needed.

BEFORE AND AFTER

The Espresso color is a lot more pronounced.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I did enjoy using the NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen in Ash Brown, but I think the Espresso shade is a much better match for my dark brow hairs.  My original review for the product still stands:  The pen does a great job and is quite affordable.  When I ultimately repurchase, it will be the Espresso color.

The Milani and NYX pens are able to hold their own against the competition such as Urban Decay and Stila.  The pens are also way WAY better than MAC Shape + Shade Brow Tint pen (that pen is awful, really).  So why pay more when you can get the same result without breaking the bank?

Some people buy packs of gum on impulse at checkout.  I buy brow products.  This one is a little different though:  It's not a pen.  For once I have purchased... a pencil!  Enter:  Etude House Drawing Eye Brow Pencil in Shade Dark Grey.

Since I like to save my Milani Weekend Brow Pen for the weekend or when I go out, I decided to try something just for every day.  A small K-Beauty shop opened near me so I popped on by.  After all, it's good to support small businesses!  Since my brows are pretty full right now, a pencil may be just enough for the few patchy areas.

Comes with a convenient spoolie brush at the end.

SWATCH

Etude House Drawing Eye Brow Swatch in Dark Grey

The shape of the Etude House Drawing Eye Brow Pencil is reminiscent of Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer as it also boasts the triangular tip to aid in application.  The main difference however, is the price.  The ABH Brow Definer is about $23.00 a pop but the Etude House Pencil is only a fraction of that, coming in around $4.99 each.  I have to say - don't let the price fool you.  As far as brow products are concerned, price does not equal quality.

There isn't a lot of variety when it comes to packaging for brow pencils, but I do like how the Etude House Drawing Eye Brow Pencil has color coded caps so you can differentiate between the pencil side and the spoolie side.  It's the little things.  I also like how the grey color leans slightly warm so it's not a true grey that might look weird on the skin.

BEFORE AND AFTER

It resisted fading from running water!

Etude House Drawing Eye Brow Pencil Before & After

The Etude House Drawing Eye Brow Pencil did very well with the water test and did not wash off whatsoever when being held under running water.  With that said, I was still on the fence about this product.  I'm just used to brow pens which have a lot more depth as far as pigment is concerned.  However, the more I used it the more the material began to soften up and became a lot better to work with.  While I would probably reach for something of HG status for a date night, I think this pencil is good for running errands or going to work.

I think the best thing about the Etude House Drawing Eye Brow Pencil is how easy it is to use though.  Unlike Brow Pens, there is virtually no learning curve.  This is probably the most "grab and go" brow product I have ever tried.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I like the Etude House Drawing Eye Brow Pencil, but I think it's best suited for those whose brows only need to be filled in a little bit.  For those with sparse brows (or trichotillomania), it could be good as a background shade and then adding individual hairs on top using a brow pen like NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen.  At the end of the day though, sparse brows may require something a bit more robust.

All in all, the Etude House Drawing Eye Brow pencil is the most affordable out of all of the brow products I have tried, and I think it's good for the price.

Review: Duo Brush-On Adhesive - Lash Glue Brow Gel Hack!

I can't remember where I first heard it from, but apparently you can use lash glue on your brows instead of brow gel or the soap brow method.  Lash glue is affordable enough, so I figured why not give it a try?  I'm ready to board this train to fluffy brow town.

DUO BRUSH-ON ADHESIVE
Lash Glue Brow Gel Hack!

All aboard the bushy brow train!

INFO SHEET

Brand:  Duo
Product:  Brush-On Adhesive with Vitamins
Scent:  Like glue... but not noticeable after application.
Price:  $6.49
Where to Buy:  AmazonTargetUlta

I've used many different brow gels in the past, but just couldn't get them to work for me.  They wouldn't make my brows straight enough and would get all gunky.  I liked the results from the soap brow method, but alas my skin is too sensitive to leave soap on it and would get very itchy.  Plus if you intend to go swimming or live in a hot climate then just forget it.  It won't last.

I was also toying with the idea of getting brow lamination, but just wasn't sure if I was ready to commit.  Enter:  The lash glue brow gel hack featuring Duo Brush-On Lash Adhesive!

I arbitrarily chose to test this hack using Duo Brush-On Lash Adhesive.  I had searched for the best lash glue and sorted the results by highest rated.  I've never heard of this product beforehand because I've never tried fake lashes.  This lash glue is available in both dark and clear.  I went with clear because 1) how dark is dark? and 2) clear might be more forgiving if I mess up!

BEFORE AND AFTER

Don't put too much - trust me.

Brow Filler + Lash Glue = Win.

What isss thisss?  Color me shocked - now that's a bushy brow!!  You only need a teeny tiny amount to achieve the results above.  I'm talking VERY little.  The pictures above are from my second attempt, because my first attempt was an utter failure.  I had put what I thought was a moderate amount but ended up with rock hard brows.  I also learned that I probably should have trimmed my brows first, because I ended up looking like Brock Lee.

Another thing to note is that this sucker dries really fast, and you might need a good makeup remover (depending on how much glue you use).  For round two with Duo Brush-On Lash Adhesive, this is what I did:

  1. Trim my brows first by brushing them upward and trimming the straggly ones.
  2. Apply a small amount of lash glue and quickly brush the brows up and style.
  3. Fill in any areas that need a little love (I used my trusty Milani Weekend Brow Pen)
I used an old spoolie brush to style my brows upward and then out towards the tail.  At first I was worried that the lash glue wouldn't play nice with the brow pen, but it dried so fast that I had no issues filling them in afterward.  I also needed significantly less brow filler than I normally would; which means my brows look less "filled in" plus less fading to worry about.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The lash glue brow gel hack is nothing to gawk it - it actually works VERY well.  I would honestly feel comfortable using it at a water park or the beach because it was completely water resistant.  I can't say the same for whatever brow filler is used afterward, but rest assured that the hairs should stay put.

The Duo Brush-On Lash Adhesive was perfect for this experiment.  It's very affordable, helped achieve what I set out to do, and did not irritate my skin.  It does leave a slight tacky feeling if you touch your brows, but at least they aren't going to budge!  It's also Made in Korea so that's a plus in my book.

While I am still in love with my Milani Weekend Brow Pen... I do tend to have a wandering eye when it comes to brow products.  NYX is known for their quality yet affordable makeup, and when I saw that they recently dropped the new Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen; I knew what I had to do.

When I received my order, the first thing I did was shake the pen to make sure it had the little mixy ball thing inside (it does).  I have found that pens with this technology tends to last a little longer.  So we have:  Mixy ball - Check, Nice cool brown shade - Check.  First impressions are important, but how well will it fare on my face?

SWATCH

NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen in Shade Ash Brown

The pen is just a little more polished than Milani Weekend Brow

Like the Milani Weekend Brow Pen, the NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen has a very fine precision brush tip.  At first I thought I had ordered the Milani pen by accident, because the size and shape of the pen was very similar albeit a little more polished.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it; I guess.

There are quite a few colors to choose from, but I decided to go with the Ash Brown color because I tend to err on the side of caution and order lighter.  I think using a marginally lighter shade tends to give me a more natural look.  However, I think the Ash Brown shade might be oh so slightly too light for me, so I will order a darker shade next time (UPDATE: Swatch for Espresso can be viewed here!).

What I really like about the NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen is that the precise tip is just the right amount of stiffness.  You don't want it too soft because then it won't be able to push through those brow hairs!  Too hard, and well.. the ink just doesn't want to come out.  So far, everything seems to be just right.

When I first swatched the product I drew a small stroke on my hand to see how fine the tip was.  I then instantly forgot about it and went about my day.  To my horror later on, I thought my hand had grown a long gross hair; only to realize that it was the stroke I had drawn a few hours before.  Yes - it is that precise!

BEFORE AND AFTER

The NYX Brow Tint Pen is the most water resistant of all brow pens I have tried.
Works very well though I will order a darker shade next time!

If you've been reading my blog you would know that most brow pens do not survive the water test (except for Milani Weekend Brow Pen kind of); so I had low expectations when it came to the NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen.  However, I am happy to announce that thus far the NYX brow pen has outperformed literally all of the other brow pens I have tried.  As I ran my hand under the running water, this pen did not budge.  It will wipe off though, but as far as getting wet is concerned I was very pleasantly surprised.  If I go to the gym or expect to perform some sort of sweaty activity I will definitely reach for this pen first!

I like how the Ash Brown shade wasn't too warm.  A lot of brow pens I use tend to be too warm, so this blended really well with my natural brows.  The NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Pen also gave me a good amount of control.  Maybe I am getting better at applying these pens, but I really didn't have trouble making very fine lines and application was a breeze.  I was really happy with the results and had a good amount of staying power to boot.

FINAL THOUGHTS

All I have to say is wow.  NYX really did a great job with the Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen.  I've used A LOT of brow pens and the NYX Lift & Snatch Brow Tint Pen outperforms most of them.  It's just a matter of finding the right shade 😄.  I will definitely repurchase!

The more I think about it, the more I realize that there really is no need to spend a lot on brow pens.  Milani and NYX have got you covered.  The only one I think might be worth the price though is the Urban Decay Brow Blade but only because it is double sided so you get more bang for your buck.  Even so, I still enjoy the more affordable pens more!

The Milani Weekend Brow Pen comes in the cardboard backed drug store makeup packaging that one would expect, but don't let the packaging fool you.  Milani makeup is actually pretty nice!  Especially their blushes.  I didn't even know Milani made a brow pen, but when I saw it I said to myself "yes."

SWATCH

Milani Weekend Brow Pen Shade Medium Brown Swatch

Milani Weekend Brow Pen Applicator

The first thing I noticed about the Milani Weekend Brow Pen is how small the brush tip is.  The tip is the smallest out of all the pens I have tried, but also not overly flexible allowing for the ability to make fine lines.  I also have to say this thing is super precise!  It's probably up there with the Lime Crime Bushy Brow Precision Pen; which was up until now, the most precise brow pen I have tried (out of Urban Decay Brow Blade, Ardell Stroke A Brow, and Stila Stay All Day).

I wasn't too impressed the first time I swatched the Medium Brown shade of the Milani brow pen on my hand though.  While it is precise, the pigmentation was somewhat light.  So maybe I bought the wrong shade?  It's hard to tell with these things sometimes.  Next time I will purchase a darker shade to see if the color payoff is better (and share the results on this blog 😀).

BEFORE AND AFTER

Milani Weekend Brow Pen survived the waterproof test!

Milani Weekend Brow Pen Shade Medium Brown

When I went to perform the water test, I wasn't feeling very hopeful.  The swatches for most of the other brow pens completely rinse off as soon as the water hits my hand.  I was surprised by the Milani Weekend Brow Pen however; since about 60% of the pigment remained after rinsing.  It also survived hand washing and required a little bit of scrubbing action with soap to get it off.  While 60% may not seem great for say, going for a swim;  it could probably survive a quick trip to the gym or other activities where a light sweat is involved.

The Milani Weekend Brow Pen in shade Medium Brown seemed to be too warm for me when first applied.  This pen continues to surprise me though, because after 5 minutes it oxidized into a nice neutral dark brown color that blended with my brow hairs beautifully.  As always, brow pens have a bit of a learning curve when it comes to application, and the Milani brow pen is no different.  However, since the applicator tip is so small I feel like I have a little more control.  The fine tipped brush was able to pass between my natural brow hairs easily in order to efficiently draw in individual hairs.  I really liked the results!

The pen also has a little ball bearing inside to help mix the formula when you shake the pen.  The only other pen I have tried that also has this technology is Urban Decay Brow Blade.  I believe this has helped keep my Brow Blade from drying out in my makeup bag - lasting much longer than my other brow pens; so the fact that the Milani Weekend Brow Pen also has this feature is quite promising.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I was pleasantly surprised by the Milani Weekend Brow Pen.   I purchased it on a whim and had zero expectations for it, but I think I will buy it again and maybe try out some other shades.  It is inexpensive and like I said before, Milani has a good track record of creating quality yet affordable makeup products.

I'm glad that I was able to achieve a natural looking brow from this product.  I believe this brow pen is best suited for those with dry to combination skin and have somewhat sparse brows (or those who want a fuller brow).  I think the Milani Weekend Brow Pen is certainly worth trying out; especially given the price!

Lime Crime has this to say regarding the Bushy Brow Precision Pen:  "...our pigmented eyebrow filler and definer makes it easy to draw individual hairs, one superfine stroke at a time." Every time a company says that about their brow products, I get a little giddy.  I truly hope they are right but many times I found that the company is just pulling my leg.  You wouldn't do that to us, would you Lime Crime?

SWATCH

Lime Crime Bushy Brow Precision Pen in Shade Baby Brown

Lime Crime Bushy Brown Precision Pen Applicator

The Lime Crime Bushy Brow Precision Pen uses a brush tipped applicator like many other brow pens.  The biggest difference I have noticed with this pen versus the others I have reviewed (Urban Decay Brow Blade, Ardell Stroke A Brow, Stila Stay All Day), is that the Bushy Brow pen is *very* precise.  When I was swatching it, I actually said "wow" out loud because I was able to get incredibly thin and well defined hair-like strokes.  Lime Crime wasn't lying when they named this product a "precision pen".  As with all brow pens, the Lime Crime Bushy Brow Precision Pen requires a steady hand.

BEFORE AND AFTER

Lime Crime Bushy Brow did not pass the rinse test.
Lime Crime Bushy Brow Precision Pen Before & After

Can we say "brows for days"?  Really now.  The Lime Crime Bushy Brow Precision Pen brush has the perfect amount of stiffness.  Not too flexible, not too hard.  You barely need to use any pressure at all and yet you still get good color payoff.  I did not need to go over the same spot twice.  In fact, if you do so then the brows may end up being too bold.

Sadly, Bushy Brow is not waterproof.  Though Lime Crime never claimed that it was; I was still hopeful.  We can't have it all, can we?  I let the swatch set for about 20 minutes before performing the water test; where I just pass my hand under running water to see what happens.  The swatch rinsed off instantly and completely.  You can see above that it's really hard to tell where the swatch was.  I don't think this product would be good to use at the pool or gym where you would sweat a lot.

As far as whether or not Lime Crime Bushy Brow is long lasting, I am happy to say it is!  It performed well on my combination / oily skin and did not seem to fade or pill after a few hours of wear.  Oddly enough the color did change slightly.  Initially, shade Baby Brown was upon application but as the day went on it seemed to neutralize a little bit.  Strange.

I also found that application was a bit easier due to the brush not being too flexible.  It was able to push through my brow hairs without much interference.  Light flicks is really all you need since it is so pigmented.  All in all I had a good experience using the Bushy Brow Precision Pen and was able to do my brows quickly.

FINAL THOUGHTS

So far the best brow pen I have ever used.  Lime Crime Bushy Brow Precision Pen is the first product I have purchased from this brand so I wasn't sure what to expect.  Color me impressed.  I'm not sure how long the Bushy Brow Pen itself will last, but I like it so much it has been elevated to "date night" status when my eyebrows need to be on fleek.  I think it's definitely worth the price!

I'm obsessed with brow products and am always looking for the next big thing to provide the coveted microbladed look.  I just cant stop trying them!  Stila came out with a brow pen of their own so of course I had to buy it.

The Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color boasts that it can create a perfectly defined brow with a long-wearing, waterproof formula.  Another thing that it claims is that it wont smudge or run... maybe on dry skin.  But how will it fare on combination oily skin?  We shall see...

SWATCH

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color in Shade Dark

Close up of brush applicator tip.

Like Ardell Stroke A Brow, Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color also utilizes a brush tip.  +1 to Stila for not going the felt tipped route as brush tips seem to be better for more accurate applications.  One thing that I did notice is that the brush applicator for Stila is a bit more flexible than other products I have tried.  So applying fine lines requires an extra steady hand.

BEFORE AND AFTER

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color is *not* waterproof.

Before and After in Shade Dark

I want to start out by saying the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color is absolutely not water proof or even water resistant.  I drew a few lines on my hand to take photos, then continued to take more product shots.  After about 15 minutes I decided to see how the swatch on my hand reacted to water so I went to the sink.  As soon as the water hit my hand the product instantly rinsed off.  Didn't even last a second.  I wouldn't trust wearing this stuff to the pool, beach, or even through sweat.

The flexibility of the brush tip made it challenging to apply because my brow hairs would easily interfere with each stroke rather than pushing through them.  So in the end I couldn't get the micro bladed effect that I was able to achieve on my hand.  Application is a bit frustrating to say the least - and this isn't even my first rodeo.

The Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color didn't seem very pigmented.  The color looks more like a medium brown and comes on pretty sheer.  I had to go over the same spots to get enough coverage.  So in the end my brow ended up looking tattooed on rather than micro bladed.

It did last all day though and didn't fade too much with my combination / oily skin.  However it did kind of dry out a little bit.  You can see in the "After 6 Hours" photo, the product went from an even application to dark little dots.  Very strange.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I didn't like the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color.  In the end I just couldn't work with it to get the look I wanted.  It's better used for a feathered brow or ombre effect, and wouldn't be useful for those with very sparse or no brows.

Reading other reviews about it makes me wonder if I'm taking crazy pills or if I just got a bad product.  However when I sorted by negative reviews my experience was very much on par with what others are saying in that regard.  The general consensus is:  1) Definitely not waterproof, 2) Not very pigmented, and 3) Dries out very quickly.  What happened to you, Stila?  You were supposed to be the chosen one!

I feel that the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color is not worth the $21 price tag.  It's performance is about what I would expect from an unknown drugstore brand; certainly not something Stila would make.  I'm giving it two stars because it can be used for feathered or ombre brow - so it's not completely useless.  I mean, you can probably use it if you're sitting at home alone and still want to have eyebrows in case the UPS guy shows up.

I'm putting the Where to Buy link because despite my feelings about this pen, people still seem to love it.  It wasn't what I was looking for but it's at least worth reading other people's experiences before you decide :).

Continuing my search for the perfect brow, I turn my focus to Ardell Stroke A Brow Feathering Pen.  After already trying Urban Decay's Brow Blade and many other brow products, I am interested in seeing how well this affordable alternative can perform.

Ardell claims that this product is both waterproof and smudge proof.  It's affordable too!  I picked mine up from Sally Beauty Supply since Ulta did not have it in stores (shame).  Sally does not have any testers so I had to rely on the swatch on the box as well as online swatches to make my decision.

SWATCH

Ardell Stroke A Brow - Medium Brown Swatch
Ardell Stroke A Brow Brush Tipped Applicator

Notice that there is practically no feathering in the swatch; which is a good sign.  Ardell Stroke A Brow has several shades to choose from:  Taupe, Medium Brown, Dark Brown, and Soft Black.  Worrying that Dark Brown and Soft Black would be too dark; I went with Medium Brown.  When I first swatched it, it was practically black!  I think that since it was new, a lot of product was coming out of the applicator.  But as time went on, the product coming out lightened up a little bit into a dark brown... If this is Medium Brown then what the heck does Dark Brown look like?  Vanta Black?  A void in the universe?  I guess my brows will just be darker than usual today.

BEFORE AND AFTER

Ardell Stroke A Brow Feathering Pen has good staying power.

The applicator is a brush tip instead of a felt tip - which is nice for accuracy.  The brush holds it's shape very well, not too soft, and allows fine lines to be drawn.  There is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to using the Ardell Stroke A Brow Feathering Pen.  If you take too long during the application process, then the ink flows towards the back of the pen; so the brush tip will appear to dry out.  You will have to put the cap back on and tap it gently against the counter to bring it forward again.  This was really frustrating to me when I first started using Stroke A Brow since I was still learning and I was slow.  While the pen does allow you to draw individual hairs; it can take too long to apply it this way and cause it to dry out.  To get around this, it is best to apply the product using a lot of short, quick strokes to fill the brow areas that look "thirsty" and then go back and draw a few fine hairs at the end and beginning of the brow.

Another thing I noticed is if you have any skin care products or sunscreen on your brow it will hinder application and won't really adhere to the skin.  I suggest wiping the brow area clean prior to using the Ardell Stroke A Brow Feathering Pen in order for the product to transfer better.  It dries quickly so there isn't much of a waiting period after application.

The product is highly pigmented so a little goes a long way.  I found that it is long lasting and does not fade throughout the day.  It also performs well on combination / oily skin.  I did apply it before bed to see how well it would do in that scenario, but found that the product did flake a little bit over night due to contact with the pillow.  No transfer, though!

FINAL THOUGHTS

I like the Ardell Stroke A Brow Feathering Pen a lot.  I find myself reaching for it far more than my other brow products (DiorShow, Urban Decay Brow Blade, ABH Dipbrow, etc.).  The formula is nice and has good staying power.  If you can get past the learning curve then it will work quite well.  You are probably wondering if you can redraw your entire eyebrow one hair at a time with this product.  While it CAN draw individual hairs, drawing one hair at a time can take too long and cause the tip to dry out while in use.  The best way to use this product is to sweep the brow quickly with short strokes, and then add more definition at the beginning and end of the brow.

The shade range is an issue though.  Medium Brown really is very dark.  Since the product is highly pigmented it can be easy to overdo it.  If you have patchy brows like I do, I recommend using Stroke A Brow to even out the patchy areas first and then do the rest of your brow with a pencil or ABH Dip Brow.  This will give your brow a little more structure and depth; resulting in a natural look!

Ardell Stroke A Brow Feathering Pen is so affordable, I think its a good idea to experiment with it.  Try it alone or with other products.  There are a lot of possibilities here.
